Just Food's Third Annual CSA Smackdown

On October 20th, judges Tom Colicchio, Amanda Hesser, and David Mawhinney chose Grand Street CSA’s Autumn Harvest Medley with Chinatown Pico de Gallo to win Just Food’s 2014 CSA Smackdown. Julie Ulmet and Stephanie Schumm edged out the competition at the third annual event, which was hosted this year at Haven’s Kitchen in Chelsea. Grand Street was one of three teams, including Staten Island’s Mid Island and South Shore CSA and Sunset Park CSA, to compete in this year’s finals.

After unveiling the mystery CSA share provided by Stoneledge Farm and Katchkie Farm, each team had just 30 minutes to plan and cook with the ingredients, which included cauliflower, fresh ginger, thyme, bok choy, Swiss chard, green tomatoes, red cabbage, carrots, daikon, oyster mushrooms, and eggs.

In addition to the three finalists, Forest Hills, Yorkville, Farm Spot, Washington Square, 6th Street, Greenwoods Heights, and Katchkie Farm each held their own competitions to identify their CSA’s most creative cooks to move on to the final competition. Finalists were selected through a lottery from among the 10 winning CSA teams.
