A Just Food Community Advocate Takes on the Farm Bill

On January 4th, more than a hundred concerned New Yorkers attended a Farm Bill Listening Session hosted by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand at Hostos Community College in the Bronx.
 
“ The Bronx is home to urban farms like La Finca Del Sur and Taqwa Community Farm, farmer’s markets like the one at Lincoln Hospital and multiple CSAs,” said Qiana Mickie.

Bringing Fresh Produce to Pomonok

Every Thursday from 9 to 4, Veronica Class and her 18 year-old daughter Sacia volunteer at the new Pomonok Community Fresh Connect Farmers’ Market on Kissena Boulevard in Flushing, Queens. Veronica helps to sell fruits and vegetables and chats with customers about how to use them. Veronica appreciates the healthy addition the market has made to the neighborhood, “This market is very good, because everything is fresh and natural and the people are very nice.”

Veggie Educators Empower Food Pantry Clients

Where do food pantry staff and volunteers go to unleash their inner food geek? This spring, Just Food hosted a series of Veggie Educator trainings, which brought together 90 food pantry staff and volunteers to taste and talk about a rainbow of vegetables from golden beets to purple carrots, Swiss chard and purslane to banana peppers and more.

Rainy Day Farm Trips

Part of my job working on Fresh Food for All, Just Food's farm to food pantry program, is to organize farm trips so that food pantry staff, volunteers and clients can visit the farm where they are getting their produce, see the fields and meet their farmer.  We had spectacular weather for all of our trips this year...except for one.
