On March 16, thanks to special support from the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation and Farm School NYC teachers Kolu Zigby and Yonnette Fleming, the students of Farm School NYC’s Food Justice Course had the unique opportunity to hear from two veterans of the civil rights and food sovereignty movements—the Reverend Charles and Shirley Sherrod.
Just Food and Partners Announce Launch of Farm School NYC: The New York City School of Urban Agriculture
Just Food and an alliance of local horticultural and food justice organizations are pleased to announce the official launch of Farm School NYC: The New York City School of Urban Agriculture. The school will offer a unique, community-based certificate program with enrollment beginning in January 2011.
In the summer of 2007, the four Ballentine siblings – Sky, Steven, Rebecca, and Galen – collectively purchased a 35-acre dairy farm with the intention of contributing to the landscape where they were born and raised.
Advocates Challenge City Officials to Protect Community Gardens . . . Permanently!
On August 10, Just Food joined hundreds of New York City community gardeners and supporters at a public hearing in Manhattan to give voice to the vital role community gardens provide in city neighborhoods and the need to ensure their permanent protection.
On Saturday, July 10, more than 40 intrepid bikers joined Just Food and Transportation Alternatives on a leisurely rolling tour of Brooklyn chicken coops, led by City Farms Trainer Eric Thomann and Just Food's own Owen Taylor. Bikers wended their way from Prospect Lefferts Gardens to Crown Heights to Bedford Stuyvesant, finally ending up in Greenpoint. In the process, they met multiple flocks of chickens and their dedicated keepers.
