Just Food Welcomes 2015 Conference Keynote Eric Holt-Giménez of Food First


Food First, the pioneering “people’s think tank,” is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, Executive Director Eric Holt-Giménez will be launching a nationwide tour. His first stop on the East Coast will be to make the Keynote Speech at the 2015 Just Food Conference on March 15th.

Funding for NYC Families At Risk


It’s 2015 and a critical piece of food legislation, the Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) Act, is set to be renegotiated in Congress this year. CNR governs the Women Infant and Children Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (WIC FMNP) among other federal programs that provide food and nutrition education to families. WIC FMNP is instrumental to Just Food’s network of community-run farmers’ markets. For some markets, WIC FMNP is the most significant source of income, even topping cash or EBT sales.

During summer 2014, Chef Ben Towill of The Fat Radish and The East Pole embarked on a cross-country bike tour, raising over $25,000 for Just Food's Youth Community Chef program.

Just Food's Third Annual CSA Smackdown


On October 20th, judges Tom Colicchio, Amanda Hesser, and David Mawhinney chose Grand Street CSA’s Autumn Harvest Medley with Chinatown Pico de Gallo to win Just Food’s 2014 CSA Smackdown. Julie Ulmet and Stephanie Schumm edged out the competition at the third annual event, which was hosted this year at Haven’s Kitchen in Chelsea. Grand Street was one of three teams, including Staten Island’s Mid Island and South Shore CSA and Sunset Park CSA, to compete in this year’s finals.

Meet Jasmine Nielsen: Just Food's New Executive Director


Just Food's board and staff are celebrating the arrival this month of the organization's new Executive Director, Jasmine Nielsen. Jasmine comes to Just Food from Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for Aids Education. In her 15-year tenure as Executive Director, she built Love Heals into the leading provider of HIV/AIDS education in the New York City public schools.

“The power of whole foods gave me my life back and I want to pay it forward by teaching others,” she says.  “I grew up in an area of the Bronx with very little access to organic and fresh seasonal foods. I didn’t even know what a farmers’ market was. Today, my life is so much better because of fresh, local food.”
