Inspired by the local farm fresh produce she received weekly from Stoneledge Farm though the nearby Chelsea CSA, PS11 programs director Debbie Osborne dreamt of bringing the freshly harvested fruits and vegetables from the CSA farmer to her school. And the idea for the PS11 Farmers Market was born!

The PS11 Farm Market brings 3rd graders together with the regional farm and the school garden and chicken programs to bring fresh local food to the school’s cafeteria, parents and neighborhood. Through the market program the students learn where their food comes from, what it means to support local farmers, and what various fresh local fruits and vegetables taste like. And as they gain valuable skills from operating a small market, including math, handling money, interacting with the public and gathering community support, the students can learn while having fun.

Once a year, the students take a field trip to Stoneledge Farm where they meet the farmers and see how their markets’ produce is grown while getting their hands dirty. Along with the food provided by Stoneledge Farm, PS11 students help cultivate small herb, fruit, vegetable and ornamental gardens at their school. They also learn how care for the schools’ near dozen chickens, whose coop was built with support from Just Food’s Chicken Project in 2012. Each week eggs are auctioned off at a raffle raising money to support these projects.

The farmers market, school garden and chicken project are largely supported by parent volunteers, but donations from community members and government funding is also a crucial part in maintaining a market that is beloved in its community.

PS11 Farmers Market is a 2012 graduate of the Just Food Farmers’ Market Training Program.
